Social media and the internet are filled with myths about most things, including dental implants. Even friends and family, with the best intentions, can spread false information about dentistry and so much more.

I want to dispel some of the most common myths, especially regarding dental implants in Urbandale, IA.

Continue reading to learn more about dental implants, the various implant choices, and the myths surrounding these innovative tooth replacement options.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are replacement roots that take over when yours are missing. I implant these new roots into the jawbone using image-guided technology, powerful local anesthesia, and a gentle hand. Over the next few months, the roots integrate into the bone, producing the ideal foundation for your new tooth- a custom dental crown. The crown is the part of the implant that shows above the gumline.

What Are My Dental Implant Options?

Dental implants are more accessible today than ever before. Today, even complete tooth loss does not rule out your candidacy for dental implants.

Options include single dental implants or implant-supported dentures and bridges. An implant-retained denture typically requires up to six dental implants per arch for stability. A dental bridge may need only a single dental implant for the same security.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

I have you visit my dental office for a conversation and exam to determine your eligibility. This initial visit typically includes x-rays, especially if you’re new to Northpark Dental or we have no recent or relevant films on file. I will then talk to you about your smile goals.

This is also an excellent time to ask questions and share your concerns. Additionally, this appointment determines costs and establishes your treatment timeline.

My team will schedule your implant surgery if you proceed with dental implants.

What Are the Most Common Dental Implant Myths?couple in a selfie

As with many things, myths bury the facts! Below, I address some of the most common dental implant myths. When I debunk the myths, you'll see why most dentists recommend dental implants above other tooth replacement options. You’ll also begin to see why they are the gold standard.

Myth #1 Not a Time-Tested Solution

Some people believe that dental implants are the latest fad and that we don’t have enough data to monitor their long-term performance. In reality, dental implants have been part of dentistry since the 1960s and gained significant ground throughout the 1980s. That means nearly sixty years of data at our disposal.

Myth #2 Have a High Failure Rate

Dental implants enjoy a high success rate of nearly 98 percent! They are more likely to remain viable longer because they restore complete tooth anatomy and have a solid foundation.

While other tooth prosthetics require periodic replacement, dental implants can last for decades or even a lifetime with proper care.

Myth #3 Are Not a Cost-Effective Solution

Dental implants may have a higher up-front cost, but there are cost-effective benefits you may not have considered.

Financial benefits of dental implants

  • Dental implants support better oral health (protection against tooth migration or bone loss), which means less time in the dental chair and fewer long-term costs.
  • Dental Implants don’t require frequent dental visits, relines in the dental office, adhesives, or unique products to remain viable. These costs add up over time.
  • Dental implants can last for decades or life, which means less financial obligation in the future.

Myth #4 Are Painful and Uncomfortable

Dental implant placement is not painful, and recovery is typically prompt. On implant day, I use powerful local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. Then, I send you home with aftercare instructions for a speedy recovery. Most patients take an over-the-counter pain reliever for a few days following implant therapy, and this is usually all that’s required.

Dental implant crown or prosthetic placement does not cause discomfort.

Are High Maintenance

While other tooth replacement options require added maintenance, such as denture polish, adhesives, special cleaning brushes, and flosses, dental implants need only be part of your regular oral care routine.

  • Brush at least twice daily or after eating.
  • Floss at least once daily or after eating.
  • Visit my dental office every six months for checkups and teeth cleanings.
  • Don’t use your teeth or implants as tools to open bottles, etc.
  • Talk to me if you suspect nighttime teeth grinding.
  • Wear a mouthguard if you are part of a sports team.
  • Report oral health changes to my office as soon as possible.
